How we work
Where every number comes from
taxrate.in exists to be quoted: by you, by journalists, by AI engines. That only works if every figure can be traced to the law that set it and the person who checked it. Here is the whole system.
Primary sources only
Every rate enters our database from the law that created it: a Finance Act schedule, a CBDT or CBIC notification, a state stamp Act. Secondary sources (other tax sites, news reports, AI models) are used for discovery only, never as the source of a number. Each source PDF is archived on our own storage, because government links rot.
Effective-dated, never deleted
A rate row carries the date it came into force and the date it stopped. When a Budget changes a number, the old row is closed, not erased. That's what powers the rate-history tables and keeps historical years accurate for belated returns and notices.
A named CA signs off
Nothing publishes without verification by a practising chartered accountant, whose name, ICAI membership number and verification date appear on the page. Anonymous tax content is not worth your trust, or Google's.
48-hour update promise
The notifications pages of incometaxindia.gov.in and cbic-gst.gov.in are swept every week, and Budget day gets a war room. A change ships site-wide within 48 hours of the notification, and usually much faster, because pages render from the database, not from hand-edited prose.
Who checks our numbers
CA Reviewer (onboarding)
Chartered Accountant · ICAI No. pending
taxrate.in publishes no rate without a named, credentialed reviewer. Our reviewing CA's name, ICAI membership number, photo and bio will appear here and on every page they verify.
Until the seat is filled, figures published from the Finance Act 2025/2026 texts carry a "pending verification" dagger (†) wherever our internal double-check hasn't been countersigned. We'd rather show you the state of verification than pretend.
Correction log
When we get something wrong, the fix goes on the record, publicly and permanently. A site that never admits an error is a site that hides them.
| Date | Page | What was wrong | The fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-07-08 | /tds/rates/section-194h | History table showed the 5%→2% commission-rate cut effective 1-4-2025. | Corrected to 1-10-2024 (Finance (No. 2) Act, 2024) within 6 hours of a reader report. |
Data & API
The rates database is the product, and it's meant to be reused. Every hub table has a CSV download. A public JSON API for section mappings and headline rates (free, attribution required) ships with the full database import. Journalists and tax-software builders can read the terms that will govern it.
